Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD) is a GSM service which allows high speed interactive communication between subscribers and applications. ELMA-USSD is a platform that enables connectivity with many operators (such as Safaricom, Airtel, Yu, Orange etc.) and introduces messaging services with ELMA-USSD as the bearer, for a faster response time.
This platform is complementary to our existing SMS services, granting faster interactive messaging to users. It acts as a gateway between applications and the GSM network, permitting one to deliver ELMA-USSD messages of up to 182 characters on a network between mobile stations and applications.
As is with SMS, ELMA-USSD uses the signaling channel as the bearer. It is session-oriented, instead of having the store and forward functionality, implying that when a user accesses a service with ELMA-USSD, a session is established and the radio connection stays until the user, application, or time-out releases it. This technology is high on performance, delivering a faster response time for interactive applications.
